With the weather warming up and your kids playing outside even more now that the sun is shining and sports games are scheduled, you family may be reaching for sports drinks to cool off and refuel after an afternoon of outdoor activities. But you may want to think twice about that vitamin-enhanced sports drink you’re about to start sipping.

The pediatric dentists at Colorado Kids Pediatric Dentistry advise against giving your kids sport drinks because the sugars in these drinks, and in other drinks like energy drinks, non-cola soft drinks, and commercial lemonade, can cause irreversible damage to teeth’s enamel.

Dental enamel is the thin outer layer of the tooth that helps maintain structure and shape, while protecting against decay. Long term consumption of these sports and non-cola drinks can wear down tooth enamel, making teeth more susceptible to damage and decay.

Our children’s dentists recommend choosing water if given a choice. Water along with a healthy snack will give your kids the rehydration and refueling they need without harming their teeth.
