Common Problems

At Colorado Kids Pediatric Dentistry, we see many patients each year from Highland Ranch, Castle Pines, and Littleton, CO. While each patient is unique, we do see some common problems among most of our patients. Understanding what causes these problems is valuable knowledge for our patients and their parents. An important part of children’s dentistry is making sure that parents are informed of proper dental hygiene and how to prevent serious dental health conditions. We’ve compiled a list of some of the most common problems we see below:

Tooth Decay

Caries, or tooth decay, is a preventable disease. While caries might not endanger your life, it may negatively impact your quality of life.

Sugars and starches are a well-known antagonist to teeth and gums, as they produce plaque which can eat away at tooth enamel. Some of the most dangerous carbohydrate-rich foods are also most people’s favorite foods such as candy, cookies, soft drinks and even fruit juices. These foods leave deposits which bond with the bacteria that normally survive in your mouth and form plaque. The combination of deposits and plaque forms acids that can damage the mineral structure of teeth, with tooth decay resulting.

Sensitive Teeth

Sensitive teeth can certainly have a large impact on your lifestyle. As your teeth react to changes in temperature they expand and contract. Both hot and cold foods or beverages can cause significant pain. While in the short-term there is pain, over time tooth enamel will be worn down causing gums to recede and even small cracks to appear on your teeth, exposing nerve endings.

Gum Disease

Gum, or periodontal, disease can cause inflammation, tooth loss and bone damage. These more serious consequences often start with much smaller warning signs, in this case specifically a film of bacteria called plaque. Gums in the early stage of gum disease or gingivitis will appear swollen and bleed easily, often when brushing. Another warning sign of gum disease is bad breath or a bad taste in your mouth. As the disease progresses to periodontitis, teeth may fall out or need to be removed by a dentist.

Canker Sores

If you’ve ever experienced small sores inside your mouth, these are called canker sores and they often recur. The canker sore has a white or gray base surrounded by a red border. While they recur they last one or two weeks at a time. Utilizing antimicrobial mouthwashes or topical agents can help cut the duration of your canker sores down.

Orthodontic Problems

Orthodontic problems are very common and treatable. These include a bite that does not meet properly (also called a malocclusion). This type of bite can be inherited or acquired over time. Some things that might cause a malocclusion include:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Missing teeth
  • Misaligned Jaw
  • Extra Teeth
  • Accidents
  • Developmental Issues
